Sherlock: Real vs Reel!

Imagination is the real thing they say, makes you who you always wanted to be, and that brought me to the question, how about becoming the most intelligent detective the world has ever seen! Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock’s world is where everything happens following an order! Every situation has a set of definite outcomes. It assumes that the people’s habits or activities are absolutely perfect and Sherlock is the unsolicited King. In reality, we have problems in choosing Pizza over Burger.

Let’s take an example, Shall we? (That’s how he speaks, I suppose! 😛 ) in ‘The Blind Banker’, Sherlock identifies that the person is left-handed saying “The butter knife on the kitchen surface has butter on the right side of the blade because he used it with his left.”
In the real world, almost nothing is perfect! Even a left-handed person’s butter knife would have butter on both the sides, maybe some jam too, considering his delight for jam !! 😛

In Sherlock’s world, we are constantly reminded of the fact that he is a high functioning Sociopath who doesn’t really care about human emotion,  is far away from its clutches and likes to live life dangerously duping himself in drugs as if they were candies. Trust me when I say this, we would die, yes die even if we consider taking in that much drugs out of shock, leave alone doing it.

Sherlock Holmes in Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ Sherlock at times seems to be a genuinely nasty bloke going head over heels going to a point where he is seen telling children that their grandfather is rotting in the ground, and even being dismissively rude towards Russell Tovey’s potential client, for instance. Him telling Kitty Reilly, the journalist in The Reichenbach Fall, that “you repel me” was more than a little over the top. (Well, She was selfish, ambitious and a little manipulative, but she repels him? A man who deals with criminals more or less every day?) . Just consider telling that to a person on his/her face and see the world burn.

Then again, comes the point where Sherlock is seen to be almost perfect at whatever he does and so does Moriarty, his nemesis, but really? In his infamous “Reichenbach fall” you want me to believe that you can fall off a building and then fly like a bird off to glory, that’s some fantasy ‘shizz’ going on there.

Falling is like Flying.gifImage Source:

Oh Oh Oh!! how can I not talk about The Mind Palace when I talk about Sherlock, that’s one thing which has perplexed everyone with it aura on how clear can one’s vision and thoughts be, let me break it to you,  no matter how cool it may sound, it’s next to impossible to get such a high dedicated  sense of mind mapping.

giphy.gifImage Source:

Well, that is unless you are Chacha Chowdhary and your mind works faster than a computer. 😛

I know this article is going to bring me in the bad books of all Sherlock fans and they might have even listed down various ways where I would end not in a condition I would like to be in, but then again, Anonymity is Bae and I am loving it. So I would want to end this saying Boo Yeah !!

PS: I love him, just like anyone of you do and it would be a shame if we don’t get to see more of him. *Drools*

#MeToo- The Revolution Of The Silent

Since sunday, the cry of #MeToo has been rallying across our social media feed. It’s no longer a viral campaign but a movement taking the internet on storm! The cry  resonates with each heart, ripe with the petrifying ordeal of sexual harassment and assault. More than half a million, women and some men, tagged their profile for being sexually assaulted, confirmed by Twitter.

How It Started!

The movement started in response to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the American film
producer, who is accused of bulldozing eminent actors for non-consensual sex. The star from the sitcom- ‘Who’s the boss’, Alyssa Milano’s tweet gained the movement its momentum, it needed.

Milano’s tweet, instigated an onrush of famous women and many not so famous; and even men, who tweeted  their experience of such encounters with the #MeToo.

The Origin- An Activist and a Victim!!

Milano’s call out to the victims was “so we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”, actually started 10 years back with Activist Tarana Burke. Burke is the program director for Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity. Its goal is to empower young women of color. The seeds for this movement, were sown back in 1996, after an encounter with a young girl, afflicted by the atrocities, inflicted on by her stepdaddy. Burke couldn’t help her and so she sent her to another activist, who, according to her would help the girl better. However the eyes, screaming of the monstrous deeds, her developing body had faced, was unforgettable!

Tarana Burke- The Activist in a Me Too t-shirt, sharing the story.

“The shock of being rejected, the pain of opening a wound only to have it abruptly forced closed again — it was all on her face,” Burke wrote.

That was the genesis of the movement — to help young women of color who had survived sexual abuse, assault and exploitation.

“On one side, it’s a bold declarative statement that ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m not alone.’ On the other side, it’s a statement from survivor to survivor that says ‘I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I’m here for you or I get it,'” she told CNN.

Read the whole story on CNN, click here.

With over 12 Million comments, shares and posts on Facebook, more than 300,000 Instagram posts and 800,000 tweets; this movement is paving a way for everyone irrespective of gender, to have a voice. It’s promoting a ground of empathy and making one feel that you are not alone in this.

Stand-up-comedian Malika Dua shared her #MeToo story

But what saddens me is the fact that the perpetrators are still out there, shaming and molesting another woman, man or the LGBTs, while you read this article. The ‘Nirbhaya case’, :The gurgaon rape case’ and the many unnamed, unrecorded and unjust cases, that vanish into the thin air; continue to torment every soul. It’s time to introspect where we are going wrong as a nation, a society, a family member, a bystander, or more importantly as humans.

“Why is our society so?
People sit with facade faces in a row,
They sigh and sympathize giving fake hopes.
Oh mother why did you allow me to be a part of this pathetic world?
With no true feelings and word!”

( An excerpt from my poem – The fear of being! , I wrote as a 16-year-old, shook by The Nirbhaya case)

I feel the world at large is, perplexed and confused. On one hand we objectify women in superhit songs, teaching our sons- ” Zyada padh liya hai toh pankh nikal aae hai, mutthi me rakhna isey”. And on the other, considering the fairer sex, as ‘khuli tijori’, lashing them at the commands of the so called society; in order to protect them from the lustful eyes? The most disgusting irony is that we worship Maa Durga, Maa Laxmi and what are we doing about our ghar ki laxmi- betiyaan? No wonder, You are a strong woman, ready to fight, to carve your niche, to be an example. No matter what you are- a young woman, an adolescent, an old woman or a new-born; the fact that you are a woman, makes you a perpetual victim.

It’s time for a change! To propagate – ‘No Means No‘! And the change begins with each of us pledging to Say No to – elicit/ propagate/ participate/ be insensitive and initiate  any spark that would burn the very foundation of a safe, just and liberal society.

The #HowIWillChange hashtag kicked off last night, with Sydney-based writer Benjamin Law calling for men to share how they will help tackle the culture of sexual harassment.

“Guys, it’s our turn,” he wrote on Twitter.

It was a welcoming stream, where men stepped out in support of the #MeToo movement, accounting zillion stories of assault and pain. Some used #IHearYou while some used #MenToo and some pledged to stop this all!

The need of the hour, a dire need I’d say; a Revolution! An anonymously created spreadsheet got men from media circles,  shaking in their Vans, is being passed around, listing “Shitty Media Men” accused of everything from sending creepy direct messages to violent sexual assault. Finally the world seems to take up arms ( Social Media platform) against the hypocrites, so-called powerful men, to end their reign.

I feel gifted to be a woman and am proud of my naari shakti. To all  the brave women out there here’s a thank you from my side-

Coming out strong, with your harrowing encounters, is a brave thing to do. Your courage, will help many victims to voice out their similar experiences. It will give wings to the lost confidence, it will ignite the lost fire to live, in the hearts of those who felt their voices were crushed under the stings of patriarchy and strangled at the hands of the society, which shames the victims. I am thankful to you all, that i got the strength to discuss about my fears and experiences as a woman, through this article!

6 Tips To Improve Your Math Skills

From 2 X 1= 2, to  Show that  ∑(1+2+…n) = n(n+1) / 2 . We all grew up! Math is like that constant Κ, omnipotent and eternal…! The more we try to evade Math, the more we need it. From calculating how much will be left to eat pani-puri, after brawling with the sabzi wale bhaiyaji, to formulating the new nuclear weapon; Math has empowered people from every facet and sect of life. We are not trying to make you the next Srinivasa Ramanujan or Pythagoras. But understanding and strategically approaching Math problems will help you through your various University entrance exams, and will also make you smarter while performing daily chores. On World Maths Day, let’s look at Math as a fun subject, adhering with the concept.

Here are 6 tips to ensure that you do not get overwhelmed by Math!!

1. Chisel Your Left Brain

Our left brain is responsible for the veracity of our Math Skills. You need to empower it. Churn up the brain muscles by doing activities which involve logic and reasoning. Grab your daily newspaper, do some reading and move on to the Crossword and Sudoku column. Work on these puzzles and exercise your brain. This will enhance your logical reasoning and thus improve Math Skills.

2. Play Math Games

What can be more fun than playing and learning at the same time? Travelling or waiting for your conveyance, make it productive by indulging in math games online. There are also many maths apps like Dragonbox Algebra 5+, Operation Math which will unleash your hidden math talents. Doing this regularly will improve your maths skills and it’s addictive fun.

Operation Math

3. Math in Every Day Life

Probably you have mastered this art by now. For instance, If I drive at 60km per hour and the journey is usually two and a half hours, how far is Starbucks, anyway? How much would I pay for the Louis Vuitton dress after the 40% discount. What should be the run rate, that India needs to maintain for victory. Try to do the math in your head before hitting for the calculator. Challenge yourself by making the questions harder and until you are working them out on paper.

2014_03_12 cartoon

4. The Bigger Picture

Maths is all about mugging up formulae! That’s what all people say, frustrated by the oddity.  I agree, but did you try to analyze the nuances of their origin. Don’t you feel that once you understand the concept of anything, it helps you retain better? Try to learn the principles behind formulas and see the difference.

  • Start doing some research. Why and how did Aryabhatta invent zero? How did Pythagoras decipher, the formula to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle?
  • Explore with that new principle–in the Pythagorean theorem example, try applying the theorem to other shapes than triangles. Can it be translated and applied to other shapes like rectangles, hexagons, squares, etc.? Why or why not?

Understanding why a principle specifically applies to some instances and not others will help you better integrate and apply that principle as you go forward.

5. Math is Not a Spectator Sport!

You can’t just read math like English. No one beholds the power of the Robot- chitti. Math comes handy with practice and loads of it. Whether you are preparing for GMAT, GRE. CAT or any other exams. Try to get your hands on a variety of questions. Ditch that Calculator of yours as they are not allowed in exams. You have to be active, doing, solving, making connections, learning. It’s the only way to build skill and understanding. Be persistent and Practice, Practice, Practice!!

6. Be Positive:

The perpetual cry – ‘I can’t get Math’, ‘Math – not my cup of tea’, will dampen all the efforts, you made until point 5. You need to be resilient and positive. Start with some easy maths you understand. It doesn’t matter what level you start with as long as you build skill, understanding, and confidence. You move forward through more difficult levels. Keep Fighting!

Remember, while attempting a question try to understand what the problem says; your mind is now capable of realizing the skill set used for the particular problem; if there is a word problem try sketching out a figure and review the solution.  I hope this article helps you find a way through this intricately beautiful subject. Geofencing – The Biggest Marketing Trend That You Have No Idea About

Geo-fencing. Have you ever heard the term? Take a guess as to what it means. If your answer is along the lines of “a kind of martial sport” or “some new Jio feature launched by Ambani?”, This article is for you. Irrespective of who you are – a college student, or a local businessman, or anyone, Geo-fencing is something that everyone should know. In this age of digital and social media, with e-content driving the performance trends of most industries, no person in the supply chain – be it the marketer or the consumer should be ignorant about the latest advent in a world that thrives on digital manifestation and recognition. Coming back to the big question –

What is Geo-fencing?

Geofencing is the practice of using global positioning (GPS) or radio frequency identification (RFID) to define a digital geographic boundary which can be used for dissemination of data within that pre-defined territorial demarcation. Excuse us for the chatur-ish answer!  Long story short – it means you can define a geographical territory and send a message or any data to people falling only within that area.

geofencing abstract #2

“So? How does it matter to me? What do I do with this information?” Have these questions popped up in your mind? Nice, because honestly, we’d be disappointed if you didn’t!

Why does it matter?

Geofencing, by its very elementary structure, opens up the avenue of target creation. As a layman, sample this – suppose you’re in a Whatsapp group, and someone comes up with a statement that you have a nasty comment to make on which you want to share with your best friend, but cannot make so in the group because of the fear of being judged by others. What would you do? Text your best friend on a personal chat, right? This way, data (your comment) reaches your target market (your best friend) without the risk of wastage (judgement by other people). In short, welcome to Geofencing.

By virtue of its ability to reach macro-levels of target penetration, geofencing has provided an exciting new means for marketers to reach out to their desired markets in the most efficient way. Marketers now have the ability to virtually reach out to their market in person, taking advantage of people’s growing digital affiliations by sending them messages using their favourite apps. Also, not just apps, but other methods such as billboards, set up only in particular areas to attract the target market, are also quite popular. Even though the above lines are just an introductory phase to the real world application of geofencing, you would have realized by now why it’s the next big thing in the marketing business. Now for the real thing –

Real-world applicability of geofencing

Imagine this – you enter a mall and are greeted with an SMS by McDonald’s about a new combo offer, or a new burger they might have introduced. You walk in and are immediately greeted with the ever-so-familiar yellow M sign. Your mind is already thinking about that offer listed in the SMS, and behold! Here it is in front you, your chance to try out that offer that McDonald’s has just tempted you for. You think about how hungry you’d get while shopping, and so, you tell yourself – “Ehh what’s the harm? Let’s try it out once”. And then you do.

For McDonald’s, it’s Mission: Accomplished.

Now here’s the part which makes geofencing interesting. Imagine if you were sitting at home, or at work, and had received that SMS. You would have thought to yourself – “Nice, but who will go all the way now? Maybe someday…” and shut goes the phone. The “someday” will almost never come unless someone is an absolute die-hard fan of McDonald’s. So that potential sale for McDonald’s will never realize. In this way, McDonald’s would have texted a thousand people but only got additional sales of say 100. The rest 900 is a wastage of resources for McDonald’s. Compare this with geofencing – where McDonald’s would only have to text the 300 people entering the mall and like you, a hundred, if not more, would be lured into sales. Thus, not only improving the sales but also reducing the wastage of 900 texts.

Once again – Welcome to Geofencing.

Why geofencing?

So by now, we’re sure you’re thinking – ‘’Ok, this was 1 example. But it can be an aberration How is it a potent weapon otherwise?” For number-sucking geeks like you, we have the data that will prove geofencing is the Batman of the marketing world –

Geofencing data charts

Total Hours on Phone

It is clear that mobile data usage is at an all-time high, and that the figures are only burgeoning by the day. What’s more exciting, is that a tool as potent as this is being resorted to by barely 39% of all marketers. This gross under-utilization has thus created a take-as-you-come situation for new marketers. What’s more, is that it does not require much of investment. All you need is data gathering – phone numbers of people/social media preferences, etc as well as the services of a tech-guy who can help you install this geo-circumference.

Now that you’re in a position to say with confidence that you understand geofencing, let’s take this a notch up.

Ways  of using Geofencing technology

Conceptually, there is no such thing as “different types” of geofencing. The variety lies in how each marketer perceives and utilizes the concept for his benefit. Which can be in one of the following ways –

  • Geo-Aware Ads

This “type” works on the principle of tagging the potential buyer/consumer. It locates the person(s) on a real-time basis and provides them ads about the location they are in currently, depending on weather, local events, specialities of that location, etc. E.g. when you travel to a place where it might be raining, a local beverage store may send you ads and texts convincing you to consume their hot delights.

  • Geo-Fencing

In this, a marketer tags a fixed, physical location, and all people in the set vicinity of the location will be targeted with the required ad/message. The McDonalds example above is a case of geo-fencing.

  • Geo-Conquesting

This is where it goes all down and dirty! Here, a marketer tags the location of his rival(s), and every person entering the vicinity of the rival is targeted. E.g when you walk into a Maruti showroom, Hyundai may send you a message about cars of Hyundai that may be competing with Maruti, tempting you to compare and decrease the possibility of buying a Maruti product.

So now, you’ve heard all arguments, seem pretty impressed by the idea, but something is still lacking? We know it. You do not want to be the fool who tried something new and failed at it, do you? Fret not, some biggies have already taken the plunge, and are reaping the harvest of lip-smacking profits.

Geofencing – The success story

Following are some of the cases that have driven geofencing to its next-biggie status in the industry:

DD wanted to boost sales of its unit located inside a rural gas station. Adopting geofencing, DD ran mobile display ads between 4 and 5 miles around the location. It also built a custom landing page with a coupon embedded and links for customers to be able to share the coupon with friends via social media. A navigation map was also linked, along with a reminder triggered upon reaching the location. The result? Over a 4 day period, DD registered 164 customers click to get the coupon in the target radius.

2) uber logo

Uber uses geofences at Los Angeles International airport so that when users arrive at the airport they are notified about the number of cars available to meet their needs. It proves that thinking about ways to let your customers know you have what they need, as also when they need it most, is a great way to use the geofencing capabilities of your business’ mobile app. You need to stay competitive, and a lesson from Uber’s proactive geofences can certainly put you ahead of your competitors.

3) BMW logoBMW has also employed geofencing into their mobile business plan—in a rather different manner than the rest. Where most companies are using geofencing as a tool for garnering consumer attention with flashy promotions, BMW’s use is a little more pragmatic. BMW incorporates geofencing in their BMW Trackstar and BMW Trackstar Advance services. After the activation of this service, your car’s position is pinpointed every 20 seconds. If the car is moved without the use of its keys, and the car moves out of a designated geofence, it will notify BMW who will then reach out to the car’s owner. This is a brilliant example of providing value-added services for customers (theft protection), thereby contributing to customer retention and free word-of-mouth publicity by satisfied consumers.
