Live-In Relationships ~ New Kid on the block?

A rush of chilliness ran down my spine when he asked me if I wanted to move in with him. I stood there, dazzled and confused at the same time. Did I hear it right? Or maybe he meant something else? A sense of delight was slowly chipping in but I kept a blank face on, holding my ground, waiting for him to come again. As startled as I was, I didn’t want to give that away. I slowly moved towards him pretending as if I haven’t heard him in the first instance. “Sorry,” I said. “I guess I couldn’t hear you”, gently sliding that strand of hair that was covering my left eye while the right lay glued at him, catching every last bit of reaction I could gather. He, for once hesitated, and then mustering up his voice said again, “Do you wanna Move in with me?”. And there I could see him turning pale as if he had seen a ghost. While I, on the other hand, was trying to control my laughter on looking at his face which was showing signs of uncertainty and fear. I leaned towards him wrapping my hands around his shoulders, staring him in the eye and said, “I thought you would never ask.” and that was our moment, A moment to cherish. While the sun was setting down, giving way to the moon, the sea met the horizon, crimson redness scattering all around as if it’s giving an approval for us to be together.

But it was a day later when reality struck. LIVE-IN was supposedly a huge deal for people around. I couldn’t understand why. I mean, It’s me who is the one who will be impacted and it’s everyone else around who are feeling the heat. Why so? Well maybe because it’s their job to judge! But then I don’t know what makes them judge it anyway. Two grown-up individuals who like each other decide to live together under one roof. Where in this world does that sound Corrupted? And yet, It’s frowned upon. It’s easy to judge others but then judging someone on the basis of a preconceived bias which is all but positive might be termed as a jerk move. (Oh Damn. Are the moral police reading this? :3)

Let’s get into some statistics while we are talking about this to make it a solid research supported account about the new kid on the block, and most importantly, one who is here to stay, Live-in Relationship! The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reports that more than half (54 percent) of all first marriages between 1990 and 1994 began with unmarried cohabitation. This said I guess more than half of the people can’t be that wrong. Eh?

BUT BUT BUT, There always has to be a but. Isn’t it? 😂

Live-In comes with its own share of problems and downfalls. Let’s me try to lay that down too :

  • Living together is considered to be more stressful than being married.
  • Just over 50% of couples who have lived-in ever get married.
  • Couples who lived together before marriage tend to divorce early in their marriage.
  • Compared to married individuals, those cohabiting have higher levels of depression and substance abuse.

Should that stop us from getting into one? Naah. We are the Millennials. We love to live dangerously. But then again completely ignoring the fact and the noticed patterns would be a foolish move. It’s always the decision of the couple. What can be done is put in the rationality of thoughts about your motivation for living together.
Is it just out of convenience?
Is it to spend more time together?
Are you uncertain about the relationship and want to make a more informed decision?
Or, is it just a prelude to marriage?
What’s need to be Kept in mind is that couples who live together seem to have the most successful outcomes when they have already made a clear commitment to each other.
Let me try to draw a line to this now for two reasons.
One, He is getting bored and I can’t see him wait on me while I am glued to my screen.
Two, The first reason is important enough. 😉

Last but not the least guys. Whether you choose to live under the same roof or miles apart. Distance is never a problem when you love someone. It’s always about priorities and if you could make the person of your life your priority. Then trust me, all these statistics and research would be of no use at all.

10 Reasons Why Some People Never Fail to Nail their Interview

Don’t we all have that one person in our life who always ace’s his or her interviews and successfully charm the pants off their interviewers. At times, you are secretly guessing about their secret to success and thinking of how can you make sure that you get chosen or every interview is incredible? Well, below are the ten reasons why such people always rock their job interviews.

1. They do their Homework!

These people bring their A game to the table and do a religious background check about the organisation. They get themselves acquainted with the potential employer’s mission, achievements, milestones, website, blog, social media, press, quarterly reports and anything else they can find. They bring concrete numbers to the table and knowing every part of an organisation proves that the candidate is interested. So, the more you know, the more empowered you will feel and this is what makes them star interviewees.

2. Are Intelligently Inquisitive

Most of us take interviews as a single-inning match, where just the candidates have to bat the questions. But, most of the candidates impress their potential employers once they are on the other side of the pitch too. They clarify their doubts regarding the job role by posing questions with some personal tidbits and happily kill two birds with a single stone, like, ‘I teach kids at an NGO, will the job responsibilities allow me to be involved in projects?’

3. Great Story-tellers

The art of storytelling is one of the main reasons why these successful people nail every interview. For instance, “So, tell me a little about yourself” almost all job interview starts with this question and, this is the perfect opportunity where these people outdo others by telling a brief but memorable story about themselves, a story which explains, heart to heart, why they’re perfect for the job.

4.Dress to Impress

In order to be taken seriously, mannerisms, as well as appearance need to be appropriate. These people are the ones who wear well-ironed clothes and are comfortable with what they are wearing.

Quick Tip: Find out what the company culture is like and how people dress before deciding on what you’ll wear (think suits for banks, something business casual for ad agencies etc.).

5. Confidence is their MVP

You won’t find them stammering or fiddling with their hands while answering questions. They come across as nice, sociable but, their real MVP is confidence which comes from the fact that knowledge = confidence. The more they know, the more empowered and confident they will feel.

6. Honesty is their policy

They are honest and don’t depend on lies about gaps or detours in the resume. They explain what they learned during the time off and how it will benefit them in the job they are applying for. They turn this into an advantage and they share how they used the off time for personal growth.

7. Follow  “Iceberg Strategy”

Their secret magic sauce to success is the “iceberg strategy”. How do they use it? They expose enough about themselves that they are interesting and the employer wants to hire them, but not so much that they only talk about themselves and bore the interviewer.

8. They Show What They Got

By combining their past experiences with research about the organisation and where it’s going, they show the potential employer hiring person what kind of impact they can make for his or her team in the future.

For instance, they could say something like, “During my leadership as President of the Sanitation and Hygiene Society in college, we successfully raised over one lac and built around 50 washrooms under my leadership, and through this experience, I think I can add a lot to the fundraising team in the organisation.

9. Clean Social Presence

These people make sure that their public profiles are employee friendly and up to date. They establish themselves as an authority online by either starting a blog, moderating a forum or just being active in a Linkedin group. They have recommendations on their profiles and these work as the old school resume references.

Do you Know? 92% of companies use social media for their recruitment, with one in three employers rejecting candidates based on something they found in their social profiles.

10. Only Positive Vibes

With a bright smile on their face, they are able to lift the moods of the interviewers. Positive attitude, humour combined with charisma, attracts everyone and even if they lack experience or a skill set, this is their trump card.

So, now that you know what goes into nailing an interview, make sure that you have ticked all the above boxes. Prepare well with the data and be aware of your strengths and know how you can use your imperfections to grow.

Now, go ace that interview!

7 Daily Habits Of Ultra Successful People

” It’s easy to  be envious of someone’s success,

But difficult to assess the magnitude of tears & sweat they put in.”

We constantly pressurize our puny brains as to why are we not there, where success is? We feel success is for the successful, whom we imagine having been born with a silver spoon. The world seems to have one more discrimination. The successful who live on the other side and us, who are busy harassing ourselves with whys and hows.

Are they born successful? Are they born with the glitz and glam or maybe a crown?

Well, success isn’t limited to one’s IQ, bank balance or looks. There is no formula or recipe that will give you a taste of success.

But, certain ultra successful people advocate similar traits which you and I, can imbibe in our own lives.

7. Early to bed, Early to Rise!

You cannot expect your brain to work properly with a hangover or in a  drowsy state. Albert Einstein used to sleep for 10 hours a day. The body works at its best when we follow the nature’s clock- Sleep after sunset and wake up with the rising sun. Notable early risers include Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Group, Disney CEO Robert Iger and Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer. Tom Corley in his best-selling venture ‘ Change Your Habits, Change Your Life‘, says that an overwhelming 89 percent of self-made millionaire sleep seven or eight hours each night, or more.  If this is the way to success, I am on it!

6. Don’t Break the Chain!

Want to be acclaimed and acknowledged?? You gotta Work! Practice! Work! You can’t expect success to come to you. You have to make your way to it. People who are successful are disciplined and exhibit a high level of perseverance. They have tasted failure more than we have ever tried. Serena Williams, since her childhood, has been practicing tennis every morning from sharp 6:00 a.m. Dallas Mavericks owner and famous Shark investor didn’t take a vacation for seven years when his company was just starting up. That’s dedication! You will lose the grip of everything you have acquired if you break the chain.

5. Hush the Gratification Monkey

The monkey in your brain hops and jumps around causing confusion, procrastination anxiety and guilt.  It’s very essential to feed the monkey with some sanity and peace. Unless your minds are focussed enough, you cannot materialize your ideas into concrete plans leading to success. Hugh Jackman discussed the benefits of meditation with Oprah Winfrey saying,

“In meditation, I can let go of everything. I’m not Hugh Jackman. I’m not a dad. I’m not a husband. I’m just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything. I take a little bath in it.”

Meditation improves your ability to focus instead on getting overwhelmed with everything that’s happening around you.

4. Exercise!

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. In fact, using ‘too much work’ as an excuse not to exercise is counterproductive. Studies show that exercise can boost creativity and productivity by as much as two hours!  It makes you smarter, too. According to Corley, 76 percent of the rich carve out 30 minutes or more for aerobic exercise like jogging, biking, or walking each day. Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States exercises for 45 minutes a day, six days per week. He exercises first thing in the morning, alternating between lifting weights one day and doing cardio the next. Mark Zuckerberg works out at least 3 days a week. Wanna win big,  get your butt off that couch!

3. Read, A LOT!!

Reading is the best habit one can imbibe. It acquaints you with the knowledge and the mysteries and the mantras of this world. Reading provides you with a mental map, which you can use to surpass the undulating phases of your life and avoid the rookie mistakes people make in their lives. Mark Cuban insists on reading 3 hours a day, while Bill Gates reads for 1 hour as part of his bedtime routine. J.K Rowling, the first ever billionaire author, read ‘absolutely anything’ as a child. So find the coziest corner of your house, brew some instant coffee and delve into the virtual reality of the books!

2. Build & Nurture Positive Relations

Your network is your net worth! You need to be around equally motivated people and devoid yourself of all toxicity and negativity. A circle from where you can draw inspiration, helps you develop and grow as a person. If you share a healthy relationship with your family and friends, you can focus better on work. Being entwined in the maze of uncertainties and negativity will hinder your growth. Successful people aim at building healthy relationships with similar motive-driven people. Tom Corley says- “You are only as successful as those you frequently associate with.”

1. Train the Muse

What separates people winning laurels and etching their name in history from us? Pros work even if they don’t feel like. When you feel this isn’t the right time to paint your muse or devise some nuclear formula; that’s the time when you act upon it. The 15 minutes of derailed faith, if fought with, can help you shun all your inhibitions. There is no ideal time for anything. You just have to guide your forces NOW!

You all must be feeling charged up and must have planned to include these habits in your daily life. Well, stop and reflect upon it. Pick up one habit and work upon it for 3 – 6 months till it has blended with your routine before moving on to another. Remember that success is hard-earned and it comes to those who have faith in themselves and do not worry about the fruit!

Tag your friends whom you see as millionaires and successful people and let them know you believe in them!!

Have you tried the World’s Second Best Exercise?

Are you one of those people who at the beginning of every month, promise themselves to eat healthy food, exercise daily and take care of the body? But, after two-three days of following the regime sincerely, all your spirits fizzle out and thanks to the frenetic schedules and sometimes, the lazy us, we forget about it and promise to properly follow the schedule at the beginning of next month. Well, most of us are guilty of making these empty promises and the consequences are ugly.

According to a research conducted on a global level, over two billion people are suffering from health issues associated with overweight and obesity, and a growing number of people are dying from these health maladies. Yikes!
So, when you are living in a world which is getting fatter day by day, it’s imperative that you convince your lazy self to sweat it out every day! And, if you are confused about how to get started?
Running, my friend is the answer. Yes! Running! It’s simple and anyone can do it.

Quick Fact: 26 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments, and a network of nerves, tendons, and blood vessels, in the feet have to work together when you run!

Below are twelve reasons, that will definitely send you running on your way:

1. Run Your Worries Away

Most of us are so entangled in our daily lives and stressed out that the mere idea of a gym session sends our mind into dizzy. But, running doesn’t put any pressure on your mental health. Instead, it helps fighting mental issues like anxiety, Alzheimers, and depression. And, all you need to do is put your one foot in front of the other and breathe.

2. Cheap

Kiss goodbye to your expensive gym membership and that super expensive workout equipment. You just need to invest a little in a nice, comfy pair of running shoes and you are good to go. Here is a quick guide to help you choose the perfect pair of running shoes.

So, save yourself some good bucks and go for a run without worrying about breaking your bank balance.

3. Do it Anywhere

Running is definitely one of those rare exercises, which you can do anywhere and doesn’t demand fancy infrastructure. It gives you a chance to move out of the four walls of your home and go out give some fresh oxygen to your lungs.

4. Go Socialize

friends running.jpg

Well, who said you need to run alone? Shut off your Facebook and Twitter for a while and go meet some real people and make some real friends while running. You can even join or form a running club with your ‘run pals’ and guide as well as encourage others to do it too.

5. Burn Crazy Calories

An extensive study performed by researchers at Syracuse found that men bust around 105 calories on an average running a mile in 9 mins and 30 secs whereas the women in the study, almost burnt 91 calories for the same time span. Although, metabolism plays a key role here, still burning calories equal to a half cup of ice-cream in less than ten minutes, isn’t bad at all!

6. Combat Diseases

According to a study done by British Journal of Sports Medicine Study, people who do any kind of aerobic exercise for minimum five days a week have 43% less chance of getting respiratory diseases compared to those who don’t do it at all. Experts say that a daily 30-minute run can help combat common cold even before it starts showing symptoms.

7. Take your furry friend with you

Dog run.jpg

Guilty of not spending enough time with your dog? The furry being cannot accompany you to your gym, but, you can take him along on a run with you and dogs are great runners, thanks to their bone structure and they enjoy running. So, both of you go and hang…run out together.

8. Do it Anytime

Who said you cannot run once the park is closed? You can run at any time be it 5 in the morning or 5 in the evening it doesn’t matter. Just, go out on the street and run along on the route of your liking.

9. Live Longer!

Run along to live along! Yes, this is very much true. According to a study conducted by Archives of Internal Medicine on about 1,000 adults, ages 50 and above for 21 years, found out that only 85% of the runners were alive whereas 66% of the non-runners had kicked the bucket.

10. Eat More Carbs!

Who said you have to give up your love for fries and pizza?
As carbohydrates are runner’s fuel for running, you can relax and still munch on those delicious fries and pizza that you like but do it in moderation as the excess of anything is bad.

11. 6/6 Vision

Running not only burns those crazy calories but also, reduces the chances of having any vision related illness like cataract,
age-related eyesight loss, and even blindness. As per a research printed in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, claimed that people who run an average of 5 miles or more a day have 41% lesser chances of developing any vision-related diseases.

12. Jam it Up!

girl running

Put those headphones on and blast your favourite tracks while you are burning those crazy calories away. Play those upbeat and high on bass tunes, to boost your mood. A recent study done by the University of Northwestern confirmed that music can make one feel powerful. Well, what better way to show you power than going for a long run?

“Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.”
— George S Patton

This motivational quote will definitely make you leave your seat, put on your sneakers and go out for a much-needed run!

#MeToo- The Revolution Of The Silent

Since sunday, the cry of #MeToo has been rallying across our social media feed. It’s no longer a viral campaign but a movement taking the internet on storm! The cry  resonates with each heart, ripe with the petrifying ordeal of sexual harassment and assault. More than half a million, women and some men, tagged their profile for being sexually assaulted, confirmed by Twitter.

How It Started!

The movement started in response to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the American film
producer, who is accused of bulldozing eminent actors for non-consensual sex. The star from the sitcom- ‘Who’s the boss’, Alyssa Milano’s tweet gained the movement its momentum, it needed.

Milano’s tweet, instigated an onrush of famous women and many not so famous; and even men, who tweeted  their experience of such encounters with the #MeToo.

The Origin- An Activist and a Victim!!

Milano’s call out to the victims was “so we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”, actually started 10 years back with Activist Tarana Burke. Burke is the program director for Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity. Its goal is to empower young women of color. The seeds for this movement, were sown back in 1996, after an encounter with a young girl, afflicted by the atrocities, inflicted on by her stepdaddy. Burke couldn’t help her and so she sent her to another activist, who, according to her would help the girl better. However the eyes, screaming of the monstrous deeds, her developing body had faced, was unforgettable!

Tarana Burke- The Activist in a Me Too t-shirt, sharing the story.

“The shock of being rejected, the pain of opening a wound only to have it abruptly forced closed again — it was all on her face,” Burke wrote.

That was the genesis of the movement — to help young women of color who had survived sexual abuse, assault and exploitation.

“On one side, it’s a bold declarative statement that ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m not alone.’ On the other side, it’s a statement from survivor to survivor that says ‘I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I’m here for you or I get it,'” she told CNN.

Read the whole story on CNN, click here.

With over 12 Million comments, shares and posts on Facebook, more than 300,000 Instagram posts and 800,000 tweets; this movement is paving a way for everyone irrespective of gender, to have a voice. It’s promoting a ground of empathy and making one feel that you are not alone in this.

Stand-up-comedian Malika Dua shared her #MeToo story

But what saddens me is the fact that the perpetrators are still out there, shaming and molesting another woman, man or the LGBTs, while you read this article. The ‘Nirbhaya case’, :The gurgaon rape case’ and the many unnamed, unrecorded and unjust cases, that vanish into the thin air; continue to torment every soul. It’s time to introspect where we are going wrong as a nation, a society, a family member, a bystander, or more importantly as humans.

“Why is our society so?
People sit with facade faces in a row,
They sigh and sympathize giving fake hopes.
Oh mother why did you allow me to be a part of this pathetic world?
With no true feelings and word!”

( An excerpt from my poem – The fear of being! , I wrote as a 16-year-old, shook by The Nirbhaya case)

I feel the world at large is, perplexed and confused. On one hand we objectify women in superhit songs, teaching our sons- ” Zyada padh liya hai toh pankh nikal aae hai, mutthi me rakhna isey”. And on the other, considering the fairer sex, as ‘khuli tijori’, lashing them at the commands of the so called society; in order to protect them from the lustful eyes? The most disgusting irony is that we worship Maa Durga, Maa Laxmi and what are we doing about our ghar ki laxmi- betiyaan? No wonder, You are a strong woman, ready to fight, to carve your niche, to be an example. No matter what you are- a young woman, an adolescent, an old woman or a new-born; the fact that you are a woman, makes you a perpetual victim.

It’s time for a change! To propagate – ‘No Means No‘! And the change begins with each of us pledging to Say No to – elicit/ propagate/ participate/ be insensitive and initiate  any spark that would burn the very foundation of a safe, just and liberal society.

The #HowIWillChange hashtag kicked off last night, with Sydney-based writer Benjamin Law calling for men to share how they will help tackle the culture of sexual harassment.

“Guys, it’s our turn,” he wrote on Twitter.

It was a welcoming stream, where men stepped out in support of the #MeToo movement, accounting zillion stories of assault and pain. Some used #IHearYou while some used #MenToo and some pledged to stop this all!

The need of the hour, a dire need I’d say; a Revolution! An anonymously created spreadsheet got men from media circles,  shaking in their Vans, is being passed around, listing “Shitty Media Men” accused of everything from sending creepy direct messages to violent sexual assault. Finally the world seems to take up arms ( Social Media platform) against the hypocrites, so-called powerful men, to end their reign.

I feel gifted to be a woman and am proud of my naari shakti. To all  the brave women out there here’s a thank you from my side-

Coming out strong, with your harrowing encounters, is a brave thing to do. Your courage, will help many victims to voice out their similar experiences. It will give wings to the lost confidence, it will ignite the lost fire to live, in the hearts of those who felt their voices were crushed under the stings of patriarchy and strangled at the hands of the society, which shames the victims. I am thankful to you all, that i got the strength to discuss about my fears and experiences as a woman, through this article!

6 Tips To Improve Your Math Skills

From 2 X 1= 2, to  Show that  ∑(1+2+…n) = n(n+1) / 2 . We all grew up! Math is like that constant Κ, omnipotent and eternal…! The more we try to evade Math, the more we need it. From calculating how much will be left to eat pani-puri, after brawling with the sabzi wale bhaiyaji, to formulating the new nuclear weapon; Math has empowered people from every facet and sect of life. We are not trying to make you the next Srinivasa Ramanujan or Pythagoras. But understanding and strategically approaching Math problems will help you through your various University entrance exams, and will also make you smarter while performing daily chores. On World Maths Day, let’s look at Math as a fun subject, adhering with the concept.

Here are 6 tips to ensure that you do not get overwhelmed by Math!!

1. Chisel Your Left Brain

Our left brain is responsible for the veracity of our Math Skills. You need to empower it. Churn up the brain muscles by doing activities which involve logic and reasoning. Grab your daily newspaper, do some reading and move on to the Crossword and Sudoku column. Work on these puzzles and exercise your brain. This will enhance your logical reasoning and thus improve Math Skills.

2. Play Math Games

What can be more fun than playing and learning at the same time? Travelling or waiting for your conveyance, make it productive by indulging in math games online. There are also many maths apps like Dragonbox Algebra 5+, Operation Math which will unleash your hidden math talents. Doing this regularly will improve your maths skills and it’s addictive fun.

Operation Math

3. Math in Every Day Life

Probably you have mastered this art by now. For instance, If I drive at 60km per hour and the journey is usually two and a half hours, how far is Starbucks, anyway? How much would I pay for the Louis Vuitton dress after the 40% discount. What should be the run rate, that India needs to maintain for victory. Try to do the math in your head before hitting for the calculator. Challenge yourself by making the questions harder and until you are working them out on paper.

4. The Bigger Picture

Maths is all about mugging up formulae! That’s what all people say, frustrated by the oddity.  I agree, but did you try to analyze the nuances of their origin. Don’t you feel that once you understand the concept of anything, it helps you retain better? Try to learn the principles behind formulas and see the difference.

  • Start doing some research. Why and how did Aryabhatta invent zero? How did Pythagoras decipher, the formula to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle?
  • Explore with that new principle–in the Pythagorean theorem example, try applying the theorem to other shapes than triangles. Can it be translated and applied to other shapes like rectangles, hexagons, squares, etc.? Why or why not?

Understanding why a principle specifically applies to some instances and not others will help you better integrate and apply that principle as you go forward.

5. Math is Not a Spectator Sport!

You can’t just read math like English. No one beholds the power of the Robot- chitti. Math comes handy with practice and loads of it. Whether you are preparing for GMAT, GRE. CAT or any other exams. Try to get your hands on a variety of questions. Ditch that Calculator of yours as they are not allowed in exams. You have to be active, doing, solving, making connections, learning. It’s the only way to build skill and understanding. Be persistent and Practice, Practice, Practice!!

6. Be Positive:

The perpetual cry – ‘I can’t get Math’, ‘Math – not my cup of tea’, will dampen all the efforts, you made until point 5. You need to be resilient and positive. Start with some easy maths you understand. It doesn’t matter what level you start with as long as you build skill, understanding, and confidence. You move forward through more difficult levels. Keep Fighting!

Remember, while attempting a question try to understand what the problem says; your mind is now capable of realizing the skill set used for the particular problem; if there is a word problem try sketching out a figure and review the solution.  I hope this article helps you find a way through this intricately beautiful subject.
