Live-In Relationships ~ New Kid on the block?

A rush of chilliness ran down my spine when he asked me if I wanted to move in with him. I stood there, dazzled and confused at the same time. Did I hear it right? Or maybe he meant something else? A sense of delight was slowly chipping in but I kept a blank face on, holding my ground, waiting for him to come again. As startled as I was, I didn’t want to give that away. I slowly moved towards him pretending as if I haven’t heard him in the first instance. “Sorry,” I said. “I guess I couldn’t hear you”, gently sliding that strand of hair that was covering my left eye while the right lay glued at him, catching every last bit of reaction I could gather. He, for once hesitated, and then mustering up his voice said again, “Do you wanna Move in with me?”. And there I could see him turning pale as if he had seen a ghost. While I, on the other hand, was trying to control my laughter on looking at his face which was showing signs of uncertainty and fear. I leaned towards him wrapping my hands around his shoulders, staring him in the eye and said, “I thought you would never ask.” and that was our moment, A moment to cherish. While the sun was setting down, giving way to the moon, the sea met the horizon, crimson redness scattering all around as if it’s giving an approval for us to be together.

But it was a day later when reality struck. LIVE-IN was supposedly a huge deal for people around. I couldn’t understand why. I mean, It’s me who is the one who will be impacted and it’s everyone else around who are feeling the heat. Why so? Well maybe because it’s their job to judge! But then I don’t know what makes them judge it anyway. Two grown-up individuals who like each other decide to live together under one roof. Where in this world does that sound Corrupted? And yet, It’s frowned upon. It’s easy to judge others but then judging someone on the basis of a preconceived bias which is all but positive might be termed as a jerk move. (Oh Damn. Are the moral police reading this? :3)

Let’s get into some statistics while we are talking about this to make it a solid research supported account about the new kid on the block, and most importantly, one who is here to stay, Live-in Relationship! The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reports that more than half (54 percent) of all first marriages between 1990 and 1994 began with unmarried cohabitation. This said I guess more than half of the people can’t be that wrong. Eh?

BUT BUT BUT, There always has to be a but. Isn’t it? ūüėā

Live-In comes with its own share of problems and downfalls. Let’s me try to lay that down too :

  • Living together is considered to be more stressful than being married.
  • Just over 50% of couples who have lived-in ever get married.
  • Couples who lived together before marriage tend to divorce early in their marriage.
  • Compared to married individuals, those cohabiting have higher levels of depression and substance abuse.

Should that stop us from getting into one? Naah. We are the Millennials. We love to live dangerously. But then again completely ignoring the fact and the noticed patterns would be a foolish move. It’s always the decision of the couple. What can be done is put in the rationality of thoughts about your motivation for living together.
Is it just out of convenience?
Is it to spend more time together?
Are you uncertain about the relationship and want to make a more informed decision?
Or, is it just a prelude to marriage?
What’s need to be Kept in mind is that couples who live together seem to have the most successful outcomes when they have already made a clear commitment to each other.
Let me try to draw a line to this now for two reasons.
One, He is getting bored and I can’t see him wait on me while I am glued to my screen.
Two, The first reason is important enough. ūüėČ

Last but not the least guys. Whether you choose to live under the same roof or miles apart. Distance is never a problem when you love someone. It’s always about priorities and if you could make the person of your life your priority. Then trust me, all these statistics and research would be of no use at all.

#MeToo- The Revolution Of The Silent

Since sunday, the cry of #MeToo has been rallying across our social media feed. It’s no longer a viral campaign but a movement taking the internet on storm! The cry¬† resonates with each heart, ripe with the petrifying ordeal of sexual harassment and assault. More than half a million, women and some men, tagged their profile for being sexually assaulted, confirmed by Twitter.

How It Started!

The movement started in response to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the American film
producer, who is accused of bulldozing eminent actors for non-consensual sex. The star from the sitcom- ‘Who’s the boss’, Alyssa Milano’s tweet gained the movement its momentum, it needed.

Milano’s tweet, instigated an onrush of famous women and many not so famous; and even men, who tweeted¬† their experience of such encounters with the #MeToo.

The Origin- An Activist and a Victim!!

Milano’s call out to the victims was “so we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”, actually started 10 years back with Activist Tarana Burke.¬†Burke is the program director for Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity. Its goal is to empower young women of color. The seeds for this movement, were sown back in 1996, after an encounter with a young girl, afflicted by the atrocities, inflicted on by her stepdaddy. Burke couldn’t help her and so she sent her to another activist, who, according to her would help the girl better. However the eyes, screaming of the monstrous deeds, her developing body had faced, was unforgettable!

“The shock of being rejected, the pain of opening a wound only to have it abruptly forced closed again — it was all on her face,” Burke wrote.

That was the genesis of the movement — to help young women of color who had survived sexual abuse, assault and exploitation.

“On one side, it’s a bold declarative statement that ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m not alone.’ On the other side, it’s a statement from survivor to survivor that says ‘I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I’m here for you or I get it,'” she told CNN.

With over 12 Million comments, shares and posts on Facebook, more than 300,000 Instagram posts and 800,000 tweets; this movement is paving a way for everyone irrespective of gender, to have a voice. It’s promoting a ground of empathy and making one feel that you are not alone in this.

But what saddens me is the fact that the¬†perpetrators are still out there, shaming and molesting another woman, man or the LGBTs, while you read this article. The ‘Nirbhaya case’, :The gurgaon rape case’ and the many unnamed, unrecorded and unjust cases, that vanish into the thin air; continue to torment every soul. It’s time to introspect where we are going wrong as a nation, a society, a family member, a bystander, or more importantly as humans.

I feel the world at large is, perplexed and confused. On one hand we objectify women in superhit songs, teaching our sons- ” Zyada padh liya hai toh pankh nikal aae hai, mutthi me rakhna isey”. And on the other, considering the fairer sex, as ‘khuli tijori’,¬†lashing them at the commands of the so called society; in order to protect them from the lustful eyes? The #HowIWillChange hashtag kicked off last night, with Sydney-based writer Benjamin Law calling for men to share how they will help tackle the culture of sexual harassment.

“Guys, it’s our turn,” he wrote on Twitter.

It was a welcoming stream, where men stepped out in support of the #MeToo movement, accounting zillion stories of assault and pain. Some used #IHearYou while some used #MenToo and some pledged to stop this all!

The need of the hour, a dire need I’d say; a Revolution!¬†An anonymously created spreadsheet got men from media circles,¬† shaking in their Vans, is being passed around, listing¬†‚ÄúShitty Media Men‚Ä̬†accused of everything from sending creepy direct messages to violent sexual assault. Finally the world seems to take up arms ( Social Media platform) against the hypocrites, so-called powerful men, to end their reign.

I feel gifted to be a woman and am proud of my¬†naari shakti.¬†To all¬† the brave women out there here’s a thank you from my side-

Coming out strong, with your harrowing encounters, is a brave thing to do. Your courage, will help many victims to voice out their similar experiences. It will give wings to the lost confidence, it will ignite the lost fire to live, in the hearts of those who felt their voices were crushed under the stings of patriarchy and strangled at the hands of the society, which shames the victims. I am thankful to you all, that i got the strength to discuss about my fears and experiences as a woman, through this article!

Here are 6 tips to ensure that you do not get overwhelmed by Math!!

1. Chisel Your Left Brain

Our left brain is responsible for the veracity of our Math Skills. You need to empower it. Churn up the brain muscles by doing activities which involve logic and reasoning. Grab your daily newspaper, do some reading and move on to the Crossword and Sudoku column. Work on these puzzles and exercise your brain. This will enhance your logical reasoning and thus improve Math Skills.

What can be more fun than playing and learning at the same time? Travelling or waiting for your conveyance, make it productive by indulging in math games online. There are also many maths apps like Dragonbox Algebra 5+, Operation Math which will unleash your hidden math talents. Doing this regularly will improve your maths skills and it’s addictive fun.

3. Math in Every Day Life

Probably you have mastered this art by now. For instance, If I drive at 60km per hour and the journey is usually two and a half hours, how far is Starbucks, anyway? How much would I pay for the Louis Vuitton dress after the 40% discount. What should be the run rate, that India needs to maintain for victory. Try to do the math in your head before hitting for the calculator. Challenge yourself by making the questions harder and until you are working them out on paper.

4. The Bigger Picture

Maths is all about mugging up formulae! That’s what all people say, frustrated by the oddity.¬† I agree, but did you try to analyze the nuances of their origin. Don’t you feel that once you understand the concept of anything, it helps you retain better? Try to learn the principles behind formulas and see the difference.

  • Start doing some research. Why and how did Aryabhatta invent zero? How did Pythagoras decipher, the formula to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle?
  • Explore with that new principle–in the Pythagorean theorem example, try applying the theorem to other shapes than triangles. Can it be translated and applied to other shapes like rectangles, hexagons, squares, etc.? Why or why not?

Understanding why a principle specifically applies to some instances and not others will help you better integrate and apply that principle as you go forward.

5. Math is Not a Spectator Sport!

You can’t just read math like English. No one beholds the power of the Robot-¬†chitti.¬†Math comes handy with practice and loads of it. Whether you are preparing for GMAT, GRE. CAT or any other exams. Try to get your hands on a variety of questions. Ditch that Calculator of yours as they are not allowed in exams. You have to be active, doing, solving, making connections, learning. It‚Äôs the only way to build skill and understanding. Be persistent and Practice, Practice, Practice!!

6. Be Positive:

The perpetual cry – ‘I can’t get Math’, ‘Math –¬†not my cup of tea’, will dampen all the efforts, you made until point 5. You need to be resilient and positive. Start with some easy maths you understand. It doesn’t matter what level you start with as long as you build skill, understanding, and confidence. You move forward through more difficult levels.
